Zumba exploded into everyone’s lives in one way or another a couple of years ago and it actually took me a long time to try it.
The first time was in July 2011. I went to a Monday night class at the gym I had just joined. I was unfit and scared but was pleasantly surprised at the variety of people there. Boys, girls, kids, mums, older people, younger people, and everyone in between.
The instructor was amazing.
You start off with a warm up which is very aerobic-ish and then move into shaking it. There are different types of zumba as well. There are those that are very latin based. They tend to use music that you would dance salsa/rumba etc to and use very basic versions of those dance steps. There are the instructors who are very hip hop based, who use current music and take bits and pieces from the latin dances and incorporate them into their routines. There are also the instructors who are very gym/workout based, who use lots of lunges and squats to tone your booty! And then there is every single person in between who combines a mix of all three.
Personally my favourite is the gym/workout based zumba classes. As I’ve previously done alot of dancing, I find the dance based ones are very easy for me to follow and don’t provide as much of a workout.
Zumba can burn many calories. For a low intensity workout you can burn between 200 – 300 per hour, for medium intensity 300 – 500 an hour and high intensity 500 – 700 an hour. Which is MASSIVE!
This is one of my most favourite Zumba songs/routines
But ultimately zumba is about what you like doing and what you enjoy. Everyone starts off a little anxious but once you’re in there, and you realise that no one cares what you look like, then you have a blast.
How to get the most out of your workout.
1. Let go! As the saying goes “Dance like there’s no one watching,” and you will burn more calories than you ever thought possible.
2. Use your arms. Alot. Moving your arms around and exaggerating the moments as much as possible will again burn more calories.
3. Move up and down more. Sit into the squats and lunges. Go down as far as you can and reach up as much as you can.
4. Work that Booty! Shake. The whole time. Just keep shaking. Add shakes and shimmies when a routine gets easy for you.
Have you tried zumba? What did you think of it?
