Snap Happy For A Year

I don’t take enough photos. The last one my boyfriend and I have together (which doesn’t include drunken nights out) was taken at his brother’s 30th… in 2011. So this year, after some inspiration from blogs that I regularly read, I’ve decided to take a photo a day for the year. Of just whatever takes my fancy.

I’ll post them at the end of the week which will be Photo Friday again as I’ve been really lazy with it. This week I’ll be starting on Tuesday as it was the 1st of the year so there will only be 3 or 4 photos (depending if I’m happy with a Friday shot before I post) but most weeks will have 6 – 7.

Tuesday 1st January:
New Years Day. This is a photo of my boy and a couple of our friends

boys on nyd

Wednesday 2nd January:
I was bored at work and decided to learn how to do some origami as my friend is having her engagement party soon and wants to do her own decorations. This is what I made.

Thursday 3rd January:
Homemade pizza and wine. Yum!

Friday4th January:
This is the wall outside my boyfriend’s parents place. These crafty little buggers are soldier beetles. There is a plague of them near the beach!

The Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)

I’ve been doing a fair bit of reading lately about skin care and healthcare. I just finished the book “The Clear Skin Prescription : The Perricone Program to Eliminate Problem Skin by Nicholas Perricone” which has been really informative. It gives you a lot to think about in terms of how your diet can affect your skin. Nicholas mentions numerous times that many dermatologists and skin care professionals argue against the notion that what you eat can affect breakouts yet a few doctors including Nicholas and Jessica Wu (author of Feed Your Face), have recently come out with pretty convincing arguments that it really does make a difference.

After reading the book, I did a bit of surfing on the net about healthy foods and oils and came across the Oil Cleansing Method. I currently use coconut oil as a moisturiser however have found it to lose it’s effectiveness for me. For most people, the idea of cleansing with oil seems to make little sense but to me it makes perfect sense.

Because like dissolves like.

But what does that actually mean?

Well your skin produces oil to keep it healthy and the build up of oil can affect your skin. Generally speaking, we use oil free products to clean the skin but it goes dry and produces more oil to make up for the lack of oil on your face. And this cycle just continues until you decide to break it.

For most people, the above cycle works fine but for me, I constantly have problems with my skin. It’s not really terrible but it’s enough to bother me and it’s not clear enough to be able to go make up free to work or out. So what OCM does is it allows the oils to dissolve the impurities in your skin, allowing your pores to regroup and function as they should.

The OCM method is quite simple. Firstly you blend two types of oil together, the first being Castor Oil. Castor Oil acts as an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It also contains antioxidants, vitamin E and other minerals that boost your skin’s health. This is the oil that will deep clean your skin. The secondary oil is generally a moisturising oil. You can use coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, extra virgin olive oil – basically any vegetable based oil. It’s important to try to use the most pure, organic version as your face will be wanting to soak up the nutrients it’s providing.

The blending of oils is where it gets difficult, mostly because your skin is different to the next person and caster oil can be drying. Generally speaking most people follow the below ratios:

  • Oily Skin: Try a blend of 30% Castor Oil to 70% Secondary Oil
  • Balanced Skin: Try a blend of 20% Castor Oil to 80% Secondary Oil
  • Dry Skin: Try a blend of 10% Castor Oil to 90% Secondary Oil

From what I understand so far, it really is a trial and error process. If your skin feels too dry afterwards, add more secondary oil, if it’s too oily, add more castor oil.

Once you have mixed the blend, you need to put a small amount in your palm (size of a 20c piece) and rub your hands together to warm up the oil and then massage it onto your face. Work on problem areas and rub for a few minutes. One of the benefits I have read is that the oil blend will wipe off makeup including eye make up so you don’t need to cleanse or remove makeup prior to using the OCM. Once you have finished rubbing, wet a face towel with hot water and place it on your face until it cools and gently wipe off the excess oil. You may need to repeat this a few times so the oil comes away and remember not to scrub as this can aggravate your skin!

Once you have done that you shouldn’t need to moisturise afterwards (remembering that the secondary oil should be a moisturising one) but if you feel dry whilst working out your ratios, use a bit of the oil, rub your hands and dab over your face. The next morning you shouldn’t cleanse as you can overdo the OCM and a wipe of your face with a hot towel will be sufficient. Afterwards it’s a case of seeing how your skin feels as to whether you need to moisturise or not.

I’m yet to try it out. I’ve ordered my Castor Oil online as I’ve had difficulty finding it over the last few days and will have to wait 5 – 7 days before I receive it. I’ll be trying it with coconut oil first as I still have some left over and then moving onto extra virgin oil olive once the coconut oil runs out. Basically I’m hopeful that OCM will work for me but after having great results with manuka honey and coconut oil and then having them lose their effectiveness, it has made me slightly skeptical that this treatment will hold for me. But I will be trying it and I will be documenting it as I figure, what do I have to lose?

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2013!!

Every year I say this but last year went by so quick and so slow at the same time.

2012 was a relatively uneventful year at the start – still in the same job and hating it, no new prospect for anything but all that changed at the end of the year when my partner and I bought our house!

So I’m looking forward to 2013 – it’s the year I move into my own home, go back to uni to do a course I actually want to do and I celebrate my 10 year anniversary with my boyfriend. It’s also the year I get to see my beautiful sister get married, and the year I was first asked to be a bridesmaid for someone who isn’t related to me! Hopefully it’s also the year where I find a new job that I enjoy.

My New Years Eve was really nice. I went to a family friend’s place with a couple of friends and sat around talking, eating and drinking (not me, I drove that night). There were no dramas really and it was really nice. I ended up getting home at around 3.30 am and it was so nice to be able to get in my car and go home when I wanted as opposed to having to wait for a cab!

New Years Day we all woke up at about midday and cooked up bacon, eggs and sausages which was delicious. My friend and I watched My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding (for inspiration for her wedding of course) whilst the boys played PlayStation then headed to the beach for a bit of sunbaking. I’m ashamed to say that I have sunburn on my back but I did get to try out my new Black Milk bathers which I was told look amazing. The 5 of us then headed out for dinner and everyone left at about 10 pm when I kicked them out so I could go to bed as I’m at work today.

So it was a really nice way to bring in the new year and spend the first day of it.

What are you looking forward to in 2013?

New Year Resolutions

I’ve never really been one for New Year Resolutions. To me, most people just say the stuff that they feel they should do but never do because they don’t really want to do it in the first place. Things like be healthier, exercise more, eat better, no drinking, no smoking etc. I mean they’re all good things but most people don’t mean them. Which is funny because they are going to be mine for next year.

The one I’m focusing on is being healthier because all the others ones I’ve mentioned come under this umbrella.

Exercise More: I want to exercise more without having to join a gym. I’ve already started this by getting off at a stop early on the train and walking the extra distance to and from work. I do stretches, push ups and sit ups most nights, as well as squats. Exercising doesn’t have to mean getting completely sweaty. To me, I feel better when I do a little bit each day instead of one big workout once a week. For me it helps to do a little a night as I’m quite interested in improving my flexibility and doing something everyday makes you notice that extra length you’re going.

Eat Better: I want to eat healthier. I want to be better prepared for when I do get hungry and have the options of healthy snacks instead of junk foods. I want to crave salads and veggies instead of chocolate and cakes. This doesn’t mean that I’ll cut them out completely because I don’t believe in that, but I want to be able to satisfy my hunger without going overboard with junk food.

No Drinking: I’m not a binge drinker but I do drink most nights. This usually equates to 2 – 3 glasses a wine a night so not massively bad but still more than I really need. The good thing is, is that I don’t have heaps of drinks in one night. Well I have but it’s very rare, usually only on my birthday or something like that so I figure once a year isn’t too bad but I want to cut out on those random glasses on week nights that I don’t really need.

No Smoking: It’s the same with drinking. I don’t actually smoke that much so it’s hard to convince myself that I really need to quit because truthfully, I enjoy smoking. I enjoy breathing it in and I enjoy the social aspect of it. These obviously aren’t good enough reasons to continue but its hard to rationalise not smoking when I go through a pack every 3 or so weeks. But I want to eventually stop for future health reasons and also, smoking is terrible for my skin so I really should stop seeing as it’s so bad for it.

Part of taking better care of myself is also taking better care of my skin. Not only does this mean eating better and drinking more water, it also means that I need to find products that do good things for my skin, and not cause it irritation. I like using natural products so I’ll be doing a bit of surfing to find different methods to try.

I’m looking forward to it and making a difference to my health!

Do you have any New Years Resolutions?

Christmas Presents

My partner and I were very spoiled with presents this Christmas. Nearly everything was for the house which was lovely and helpful as I’d hate to think how people who have to do all this themselves afford it. On that same note, buying a house right before Christmas is a brilliant idea if you are a first time mover and don’t have alot of stuff.

Below is a selection of what we received.

Country Road mugs, bowls and serving bowls – 6 of each!

Salt & Pepper Alarm Clock and Salad bowl and servers.

Stanley Rogers Cutlery 42 piece set for 6.

Russell Hobbs Kettle.

Russell Hobbs Toaster.

Baking Dishes, Tongs, Measuring Cups, Drainer,, Pizza Cutters etc

Russell Hobbs Pots and Pans

We also received a few gift cards which will help once we’ve moved in and realise we don’t have whatever it is we need.

I hope all of you out there had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying time with family and friends. Because honestly, that’s the most important!

Last Minute Christmas Gifts

I finally finished my Christmas shopping yesterday which is such a relief, even though I was so organised that I thought it was all done by November but alas, things are miscommunication and when you think you’re sister is organising a gift from you for her finance, remind her!

Never mind because there were some great gift ideas that meant I didn’t even need to brave Melbourne Central to buy things.

Moonlight Cinema Movie TicketsPerfect for any movie lover, what could be nicer than sitting outdoors on a warm summer night watching a movie? Tickets start at $15 – available for Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Port Douglas and Sydney. They do have gift cards however it’s too late for those to be delivered before Christmas so you can print out your own ecard to either print or send to the recipient.  Movies run until March.

Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas
Similar to the above, outdoor setting, warm summer nights and movies. Tickets from $18 and you can choose extras such as chairs, beanbags and blankets. Note that these finish on the 6th Jan so not a good idea if people are going away after Christmas. Available at Bondi, Brisbane, St Kilda and Canberra.

Magazine Subscriptions
I received my Vogue Subscription about 3 years ago and have loved it since then. I have never been a big magazine fan but having that one come every month is really nice. There are so many to choose from and can be a really good last minute gift as Mag Shop also allows you to print out a gift card which you can present to the recipient (or email it to them) which gives them information on how to log onto the website to check when they can expect their first issue. I find it’s a good idea to check yourself because you can always pick up the latest issue to give them as well.

Red Balloon
Red Balloon have such a range of gifts – things like rally car driving, to wine tastings, to hot air ballooning to massages and facials. You can choose to purchase a gift yourself or you can choose to give a monetary value as a gift. Most of the gifts can be exchanged but do double check before choosing one in case you can’t.

Product Review: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash

I’ve never really used Neutrogena before, however as my skin just chucked a massive tantrum and decided to be all gross (that’s what stress and shit eating do to you) I decided to try something a little stronger than my Sukin products. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sukin however they tend to use more natural ingredients and I needed something a bit more chemical based for the time being and considering this only cost me $9.95 at Priceline the other day, I figured it was a good enough to try now.

What did I think about it?

At first I hated the smell. Obviously it’s a more chemical smell than I’m used to but I quickly got over that. I used it once and immediately felt that it was really cleaning my skin. It also stung a little as I got some in my eyes but that was just me being careless really. It frothed very nicely, rubbed in well and I didn’t need a large amount to wash my entire face. Afterwards my face felt very dry and tight which was expected as the it contains salicylic acid (2%).

Salicylic acid can be very drying and its important that if you haven’t used products with it before to build up to everyday use. I started once a day as I’ve used salicylic acid in products before and after a week I used it both morning and night and I have noticed a great improvement inn my skin. I’m still breaking out because I’m still quite stressed at the moment (I tell you, whilst it’s great buying  a house before Christmas because you get everything as presents, it’s damn stressful trying to save when you also have to buy presents).

So I really do like the product but I will say the downfall is that you can’t use it on your eyes. The acid is very drying and so can cause your eyelids to flake if you use it to take your eye make up off. I normally do this with other cleansers but can’t with this one so I’m rinsing my eye makeup off with the Sukin cleanser and using the Neutrogena for the rest of my face.

I did read in Feed Your Face by Jessica Wu that you should use two products and alternate which days you use them – one product containing Salicylic Acid and one with Benzoyl Peroxide. I use a product with benzoyl peroxide once a week when I remember and I do notice a slight difference but once I finish some of the other cleansers I have, I’ll try this alternating thing but for now, this has been really good!

One Lovely Blog/Blog of the Year 2012

Thank you to Sparkley Pink Lemons for the nomination, whose blog I love for all those nutritional elements as well as craft projects that inspire me to do something even though I never end up doing them!

Blog of the Year Award 1 star jpeg

1. What are you good at?

Sleeping, eating and wasting time! But I’m also good at listening to people, giving advice, being an awesome friend and an even more awesome girlfriend.

2. If you traveled to any place you love, what one person would you take?

My boyfriend of course. Although he at times annoys me, we know to give each other space and everything works out fine.

3. What kind of people do you prefer?

I tend to gravitate towards really loud people which is strange as I’m more on the quiet side but I don’t mind what people are like as long as they are kind, caring, honest and able to literally talk about anything and everything.

4. Your favorite food?

My favourite meal is breakfast (mmm poached eggs) but my favourite foods are oysters, prawns, avocado and steak

5. Your favorite animal?

Definitely dogs. My puppy is just too super cute!

6. Book you like?

Well, I was just given a book which is about My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding tv show so that’s my favourite at the moment! But I do like reading memoirs over fiction.

7. What do you think about negative people?

I don’t mind them in small doses as if I’m feeling down, it’s nice being with someone who wants their life to be worse than yours as it puts your own life into perspective about how petty whatever you’re complaining about is, but in the long term, very very time consuming, repetitive and draining.

My nominations –

A Simple Southern Life – Fashion, Fitness and Food. Definitely where I head when I need a bit of workout motivation.

Raising My Rainbow – A beautiful account of a mother raising her gender independent son.

No Fries for 365 – One mans’ adventure of fitness, nutrition and general health.

She’s in the Sky – Music, reviews and general ramblings (ramblings in the nicest, possible way)

My Bad!

Hi Everybody!

I’ve been really slack with my blog these last couple of weeks but as I’m sure you all know, everything is hectic around this time of year. Add to the normal Christmas stuff, I’ve also bought a house, had my boyfriend’s birthday and a multitude of other things that apparently simply could not wait.

I’ve been exhausted out of my mind, so busy at work and just have not had time to do anything other than go straight to bed once I’ve gotten home and eaten some dinner. I hope once the Christmas period is over things will slow down, I’ll have a chance to rest and just chill out and recharge my batteries!

Hope you are all doing well!!
